Every custom home starts differently. You may already own your property and have plans in hand, you may be early in the design process, or you may have little more than an idea of the home you want. Wherever you are, the first step is a conversation — about your property, your priorities, how you want to live, and the investment you’re planning to make. From there we can work out the right next steps for your project.

Property
If you already own your homesite, we begin by getting to know the property alongside what you want to build. If you’re still looking for land, our team can get involved before you buy and look at a potential property through a builder’s eyes. Views, topography, orientation, access, and privacy all influence what comes next, and the earlier we understand both the property and your vision for it, the better foundation we have for every decision ahead.
Design + Planning
Once we understand your goals and your property, the project takes shape. That may mean a completely custom design through our Design Division, customizing a previous MSH plan, working from plans you already have, or collaborating with your architect.
Budget is part of that conversation from the beginning. As plans develop we consider the design alongside your priorities, selections, and overall investment, so the vision for your home and what you’re investing in it stay part of the same conversation.
Preconstruction
As the design is finalized, the focus shifts to preparing for construction. Plans are completed, pricing is refined, selections begin to take shape, and behind the scenes our team lines up the craftsmen, tradespeople, and specialists who will help bring the home to life. By the time construction begins, the ideas that started the process have become a home ready to be built.
Construction
Once construction begins, your dedicated project manager oversees the day-to-day progress of your home, supported by the broader MSH team. You’ll see the plans become spaces — foundation, framing, finishes, and details turning what was on paper into your home. We stay connected with you throughout, guiding decisions and keeping you informed through Buildertrend as the home progresses.
Personalize
As the home comes together, so do the details that give it its personality. Our design team guides selections throughout the project — cabinetry, flooring, stone, tile, lighting, plumbing, hardware, and paint — with time in our Knoxville design center, visits to local showrooms, and the vendors and artisans involved in your home. For homeowners who want to take the design further, interior design services can extend into furnishings, décor, and styling.
Welcome Home
As construction nears completion, attention turns to the final details. Our team walks the home carefully, completes the punch list, and prepares the transition from construction site to home. Before closing we walk the finished home with you so you know its features, its systems, and how to care for it. And once the keys are yours, MSH keeps standing behind the work through our dedicated warranty team. The build ends; the relationship doesn’t.
